Native Plant Restoration Projects

Why This Project Matters

This project represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainable land management in a corporate campus setting. By transitioning large areas of maintained turf into native prairie habitat, the project significantly reduces water usage, mowing-related emissions, and long-term maintenance demands while improving stormwater infiltration and ecological diversity. ECS’s work supports these goals by ensuring native restoration efforts begin with proper site preparation and seeding techniques critical to long-term success.

Site Preparation, Native Seeding & Environmental Restoration Support

Erosion & Construction Services provided site preparation and native seeding services in support of Hitachi Global Air Power’s native plant restoration initiative at its Michigan City, Indiana headquarters. The project is part of a long-term environmental strategy to convert traditional turf grass into a native prairie ecosystem that improves water absorption, reduces maintenance emissions, and supports pollinator habitat.

ECS supported the early phases of this multi-year restoration effort by preparing existing turf areas, managing invasive species, and installing native seed blends using specialized seeding methods. Work was performed in coordination with sustainability specialists and site stakeholders to ensure proper soil preparation, seed-to-soil contact, and long-term establishment success.

Services Completed:

  • Site Preparation
    • Harley raking to prepare soil while preserving beneficial organic material
    • Pre-work site assessments to ensure appropriate treatment methods
    • Coordination with project specialists on soil and seed preparation
